Abstract
New answers and bearings to the much discussed problem of the relation between thought and speech can no longer be found by means of epistemological and logical speculations. In this paper, therefore, an attempt is made to verify certain long-established dicta through argumentation based on the psychology of language and of thought and on new material gathered in experiments and observations. Thinking and speaking are not identical, they are two separate performances of the human mind. There is, however, a close relationship between them as regards their evolution and function. Thus, thought independent of language is possible only in the form of primary stages, and even those can be attained by civilized man only because he possesses a brain trained through language and enabling him by its capacity to dismiss language for short periods and think along lines of object structures. Finally, a typological classification of thinking processes is being attempted which differentiates between the more object-coherent way of thinking of the scientist and technologist on the one hand and the more language-coherent way of thinking of the philosopher and the student of the humanities in general on the other hand.
